BOENNIGHEIM (msc) Sustainable action requires transparent and measurable progress. This is exactly the path Hohenstein has chosen: With its successful EMAS registration, the family-owned company has made its environmental performance externally verifiable and transparently measurable for the first time according to Europe’s most demanding environmental management standard.

EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is the European Union’s environmental management system and goes beyond the requirements of ISO 14001. Organizations systematically assess their environmental impacts, define concrete objectives and document their progress using clear performance indicators. Independent, government-approved environmental verifiers regularly review both implementation and ongoing development.

Clear Performance Indicators

“Through EMAS validation, we have made our environmental management activities externally verifiable for the first time,” says Katja Hetzer, Environmental Management Representative at Hohenstein. “Clear performance indicators help us measure progress and transparently disclose our environmental performance. At the same time, EMAS provides the commitment needed to consistently pursue our environmental objectives.”

As part of the implementation process, Hohenstein analysed the environmental impacts of its activities, identified opportunities for improvement and defined specific environmental goals. This resulted in an environmental management system that firmly integrates environmental responsibility into everyday business operations and is geared toward continuous improvement. Following successful validation, Hohenstein was officially entered into the EMAS register. For the company, registration enhances transparency, strengthens accountability and supports a structured approach to resource management

A Binding Framework for Continuous Improvement

“We support our customers in making quality and sustainability visible and verifiable,” says Stefan Droste, CEO of Hohenstein. “We apply the same standards to ourselves. EMAS provides the framework to consistently pursue environmental goals, use resources responsibly and continuously improve our sustainability performance. This reflects our understanding of responsibility toward employees, customers, and society.”

The full Environmental Statement, including information on environmental objectives, measures and key performance indicators, is publicly available on the Hohenstein website. With its EMAS registration, the company underlines its long-term commitment to environmental responsibility and further strengthens transparency toward customers, employees and other stakeholders.
